Why do airlines change flight numbers after a crash?

A crash can still occur regardless of what is the number, so why do airlines do this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swissair_Flight_111#Legacy For example, after the Swissair crash of September 2 1998 it was no longer Flight 111; it was flight 139. What use is changing flight numbers like this?
