get an adance on a personal injury claim?

Hi, My friend was injured in an apartment he was living at ( a 10 chandelier fell on his head) about 3 years ago and has a lawsuit pending. He now is in need of financial assistance and still doesn't know how long his lawsuit is going to take, since he is now waiting for surgery to his neck. Can he get an advance from his lawyer. He lives in British Columbia. Thanks for all answers in advance.

1. As an American, I cant speak to Canadian law. But here in the States, you could not get a lawyer to advance money, other than court costs and the like. But there is a new wrinkle out there that can be either a life-saver or a total rip-off. There are now financial institutions that will review your lawsuit with your lawyer and decide if they think you will win and, of course, how much they think you would win. Then if they think you will prevail they will pay you money in exchange for getting the proceeds from the suit. If a person wins, they have had their money, though a lesser sum, up front and the loan company gets the settlement. If you lose, they go home empty-handed. Be careful of this. I think its a rip-off but have had no experience to judge by. Just be very careful. Someone might get, say a dime on the dollar and then have to follow through on the suit so the loan company gets paid. Here is one of those companies. But I don't know anything about them. Just that they advertise their lawsuit advance plan on TV.
